First Paragraph
"You know me i don't really believe in marriage, Now botox on the other hand works every time." This essay will be investigating how females are represented in Sex and the City the movie, are these representations stereotypical and do they differ from the representations of women in previous texts.
According to "Tushmens" theory (19..) it is said that women have been symbolically annihilated through television showing that women do not count for much, however to a certain extent extent this theory is controversial. Representation is mainly linked to stereotypes, which is the social classification of a group of people identifying common characteristics and identifying them in a often over simplified and generalised way. Stereotypes of gender roles have been changed dramatically within society today. Historical films such as "Some Like it Hot" (1959) staring Marylin Monroe. Monroe is known to be a sexy, blond female. According to "Laura Mulvey's
theory (19..)" characters such as Marylin Monroe are just in the film for the male gaze. However over many years their has been a major change were women are gaining their Independence and freedom, therefore according to Mulvey as well as the male gaze the female gaze is becoming much popular. Sex And The City girls are typical examples of of women who are independent, successful, have sexual freedom and focus on their carriers, however historically this was not the case as women were known to be at home, this links to "Gunter's Theory (1995) were he found out that women's main priorities at that time was marriage, Parenthood and Domesticity.
